Tutor Bio:
Dan is available for in-home tutoring as well as tutoring at local libraries or cafe\'s on the west side of Los Angeles. English writing and composition (AP English Literature and Composition) is one of Dan's greatest strengths, and an essential competency for high school students preparing for college. Dan is also capable of tutoring economics, most middle school and high school math and sciences, as well as basic French and Mandarin.

Dan considers tutoring to be one of the most rewarding and engaging things he has ever done. His mother has been a first-grade teacher for over 30 years, and she instilled in him a sense of the importance of teaching and learning. He is interested in tutoring also because his chief career goal is to become a teacher. Dan genuinely enjoys tutoring, especially when he is able to meet with students on a regular basis and see them succeed academically. He also enjoys meeting the particular needs of students which might not be adequately addressed in classroom settings. The individual attention of one-on-one tutoring is often the missing ingredient for academic success.

You can see Dan\'s passion for teaching and learning in his experience as a student, tutor and teacher. He has tutored Economics, Writing, Philosophy and Mandarin, and he has also taught Philosophy at the University level as a Graduate Teaching Fellow. He is TEFL certified, and has tutored college-level writing to students whose native languages include French, Spanish and Russian. His experience tutoring writing to both native and non-native speakers of English has given him a flexibility that some tutors lack, as it is important to be responsive to the particular needs of each student. This requires perceptive listening and observing, just as much as clear teaching and explaining. Moreover, Dan\'s personal experience learning Philosophy, French, Mandarin and Ancient Greek has provided invaluable insight into the persistence and flexibility necessary for successful learning and teaching. These are traits required by both tutor and student, as every tutoring session is a partnership, the success of which depends on the commitment both persons.
